The hauling of effluent from Westport's waste treatment plant (WTP) lagoons is continuing this week with three tanker trucks moving loads to the Smiths Falls WTP. The trucks are antici- pated to complete the required hauling by the end of the week. The purpose of the emptying of the lagoons is to recover additional storage capacity which was lost after the con- struction company missed its November 21 deadline for the comple- tion of the project. The lagoons continued to be filled at a time when the plant should have been processing the waste. The construction company is financially responsible for the haul- ing of up to 19,000 cubic meters, the capacity which the lagoons had at the contracted date of completion. The plant has treated up to 525 cubic meters of waste a day but cannot sustain those rates over time. The system has been approved by the Ministry of the Environ- ment and Climate Change to operate at 325 cubic meters per day, a target which is averaged over the year. One tanker can haul up to 40 cubic meters per load. A Westport walking tour has gone new school and old school with the use of a mobile app along with an attractive booklet as your guide. The mobile version which can be downloaded for iPhone or Android users has 37 stops com- pared to the booklet ver- sion which includes only 25 destinations. The booklet version, printed in a limited edition can be purchased at the library, the museum, the town hall and the welcome centre for $5. "We thought someone might like something to take home," said Council- lor Jackie Brady, who was part of the Mayor's task force to create the brochure. Rideau District Muse- um curator Christine Janeway, who is very familiar with the images of the village's past, was behind the design of the brochure and the app. The new tour builds on a former tour which was printed in a modest brochure. The app version contains more anecdotes and more stops, from 25 to 37. A virtual tour can also be taken on a desktop or laptop computer by Googling The Walking Tour of Westport, Ontario which will take you to the pocketsights tour. By downloading the app you have access to hundreds of tours which have been created for sites and events across North America. •Continued from page 1 Mayor Robin Jones has expressed an intention to run. Councillor Gerald Schwinghamer has said he will not run. The decision of the other councilors is unknown. Just one candidate in TLTI so far Leeds and the Thou- sand Islands still has just one candidate, Terry Fodey, who is looking for a seat in Ward 1, the for- mer Front of Leeds town- ship. Race for mayor in South Frontenac The Township of South Frontenac now has a race for mayor with incumbent Ron Vandewal running against a fellow Lough- borough district resident Councillor Mark Schjern- ing. Other incumbents have also filed their papers including Alan Revill for Bedford Councillor, Ross Sutherland for Loughbor- ough and Norm Roberts for Storrington. No one has filed to rep- resent the Portland Dis- trict.
