By Mary Beth Pfeiffer Mary Beth Pfeiffer, an investigative journalist from New York State, is author of Lyme: The First Epidemic of Climate Change. Like soldiers in an advancing front, black- legged ticks are today marching across Canada armed chiefly, but not solely, with a pathogen that indiscriminately sick- ens and disables: Lyme disease. In 1990, ticks that car- ried the infection were found only in Long Point in far southern Ontario. But hitched to birds and enabled by a warmer cli- mate, these blood-sucking arachnids have found a new and rich frontier across vast tracts of the country. They are in Ontario's provincial parks, in Quebec's Montérégie region, where tempera- tures have risen 0.8 degrees Celsius since 1970, along Manitoba's Lake of the Woods, and in many parts of Nova Sco- tia, New Brunswick and British Columbia. Climate change did not cause this scourge but it is surely abetting it. In Cana- da, white-footed mice that infect baby ticks when they take their first blood meal are also moving north, further setting the stage for the disease to grow. The upshot: Canada is well into an epidemic that has exploded in the United States since the disease emerged in a small coastal town in Connecticut in the late 1970s. Today, these ticks reside in half of the continental United States' 3,000 counties, twice the number of two decades Tay Valley Township now has a race for the head of council with incumbent Keith Kerr filing his nom- ination papers last week. Kerr will be campaign- ing in a race against Susan Freeman, who served as Deputy Reeve with Kerr but in the 2014 election did not run for re-election. Campaigning wasn't an issue for Kerr to gain his office in the 2010 or 2014 elections when he was acclaimed. Barry Crampton is alone in the race to gain the office of deputy reeve. Two candidates are looking to represent the Sherbrooke ward with incumbent Mark Burnham and Rob Rainer vying for two seats. Incumbent Fred Dobbie is looking for a second term to serve the residents of the Bathurst ward. No nominations have been received for the North Burgess seats. Rideau Lakes' nominations slow to come in Aspiring Township of Rideau Lakes politicians haven't laid their cards on the table just yet. The township only has candidates for one race with incumbents Linda Carr and Claire Gun- newiek looking for a return to represent South Crosby's two seats along with Chaffey's Lock area resident Joan Delaney. Bob Lavoie is seeking a third term to represent North Crosby. Brady first to commit in Westport The Village of Westport had only received one nomination as of Tuesday when Councillor Jackie Brady submitted her papers. Leeds and the Thou- sand Islands Councillor and Seeley's Bay resident Liz Huff announced last week in a Facebook post that she wouldn't be seek- ing re-election in this fall's municipal election. "In making this deci- sion, as many of you know, I consulted widely. I have been gratified by your support for my endeavors, and by the strong commitment to my candidacy had I chosen to seek re-election," she said. Huff and her husband Jamie Sargeant have been looking ahead in consider- ation of their longer term personal needs and came to the decision together. Huff is pleased with some of the initiatives which have been complet- ed during this term of council including a mean- ingful four- year Strategic Plan, a multi-year capital budget, new investments at Centennial Park, Fur- nace Falls, Rockport and Lansdowne, the creation of the first Environmental Advisory Committee, responsible financial over- sight and more decision- making that is based on analysis of the overall township needs and rela- tive priorities. "To Council members and to Township staff, thank you to those of you who work collegially and respectfully in the service of our residents. I want to assure my friends, neigh- bours and fellow citizens that I have found the core values of civility, integrity and productivity to be widely shared amongst the overwhelming majority of people with whom I have worked at TLTI," she wrote.
