Veteran NHL Official Ready To Tackle New Challenge With Hockey East W ITH 32 YEARS OF NHL EXPERIENCE and more than 2,000 regular season games under his belt, Brian Murphy is one of the most decorated American officials to ever blow a whistle. After working his final game on March 8, the Dover, N.H., native is ready to take on a new challenge as the supervisor of officials for the Hockey East Association. The move is a home- coming of sorts for Murphy, who served as an official in Hockey East from 1986-88. "I would like to thank [Hockey East commis- sioner] Steve Metcalf for the opportunity to return to Hockey East, the best collegiate ice hockey league in the country," Murphy said. "I look forward to shar- ing my passion for offi- ciating development with the officiating staff, the student ath- letes, coaches, admin- istrators and member institutions." Murphy became only the second American to officiate 2,000 NHL regular season games in 2019, join- ing former Hockey East Supervisor of Men's Officials Dan Schachte, who reached that mile- stone in 2012. He also worked more than 300 playoff games, including nine Stanley Cup Final series, the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games, the 2004 and 2016 World Cups of Hockey, and the 1999 NHL All- Star Game. Murphy began his officiating career in 1983 as a student at the University of New Hampshire. He was accepted into the USA Hockey development program and officiated New Hampshire high school hockey before working for two years as an official in the American Hockey League and Hockey East. He made his NHL debut on October 7, 1988, and is one of a select group of officials to have worked NHL games both as a refer- ee and linesman after serving as a referee during the NHL's tran- sition to a four-man on-ice officiating crew. In addition to his work with the NHL, Murphy has been involved with USA Hockey's offici- ating develop- ment program for more than three decades.
