RULES O F F T HE D R AW NHL 3 SCHOOL-AGED CHILDREN in the Pittsburgh area received more than a healthy lunch during the dog days of summer in the middle of a pan- demic. They also received a literary lifeline from the Pittsburgh Penguins. With so many youngsters wondering what school would look like this year, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, with the help of PPG Industries, distributed 1,500 PensPals activity booklets to provide learning support to children with limited technology resources at home. According to Jim Britt, the executive director of the Penguins Foundation, the idea came about in the early stages of the coronavirus pandemic as a way to provide youngsters with fun activities that they could do at home without the help of parents or teachers. The Penguins worked with local schools to design dozens of activities focused on science, math and art. "The neat thing is that kids don't even realize it's educational because it's fun," Britt said. Each activity is tied back to the Penguins team and its players. It's all part of the orga- nization's goal of bringing the game to kids in underserved communities and creating a path where they can play hockey and become future fans of the team. So far the Pens have produced three activity books with more programs planned to be rolled out during the school year. "It's really taken off," Britt said. "People are thrilled to be a part of the program. We're happy to give kids something to do while intro- ducing them to the greatest game in the world in a fun and educational way."
