michigan top 15 5. Chance Stewart, QB Sturgis H.S. Stewart has a tall, thin frame that will fill out once his offseasons are focused on weightlifting rather than basketball or baseball. The 6-6, 200-pounder has the arm strength and accuracy to make big plays in the passing game, and adding mass will help him add zip to the ball. Stewart initially committed to Wisconsin, but withdrew his pledge when head coach Bret Bielema left for Arkansas. Rivals.com's No. 10 pro-style quarterback in the nation committed to Western Michigan in April. 6. Deon Drake, LB Detroit Cass Technical H.S. The 6-1, 215-pound Drake is a good athlete who has yet to put it all together on the football field, but should be able to do so before he leaves Cass Tech. While he's projected as a linebacker, he mostly carried the ball for the Technicians during his junior campaign. He showed good toughness and burst from that position. Drake committed to Michigan State early in his junior year over offers from Nebraska, Notre Dame and Pittsburgh, among others. He is ranked as the No. 17 inside linebacker in the land by Rivals.com. 7. Byron Bullough, LB Traverse City St. Francis H.S. Bullough is another chip off the block in a football family. His older brothers Max and Riley have both played for Michigan State, as did his father Shane, his uncle Chuck and his grandfather Hank. He's a physical player who will have to add mass to his 6-2, 195-pound frame before playing in college. Bullough committed to his first offer, from Michigan State, prior to his junior year. He is listed as the No. 24 outside linebacker nationally by Rivals.com. 8. Maurice Ways, WR Beverly Hills Detroit Country Day School Ways has the physical tools to become a big-time player down the road. Standing 6-4 and 195 pounds, he has the speed to stretch defenses deep — evidenced by his 996 receiving yards as a junior — and the leaping ability to be a red-zone threat. He's inexperienced, with just two years of high school football (one as a JV player) under his belt and needs to refine his technique and improve his hands. Ways, Rivals.com's No. 62 wide receiver in the country, picked Michigan in April over offers from Iowa, Kansas and Pittsburgh, among others. 9. Tim Cason, CB Clarkston H.S. Cason has excellent size for a corner, measuring in at 6-1 and tipping the scales at 180 pounds. He's also a fierce competitor, participating in three Rivals Camp Series events in the spring of 2012. Cason has good straight-line speed and toughness, but not the hip fluidity expected of elite corners. He has offers from most of the MAC schools and has added mid-level Big Ten programs, such as Indiana, to the mix. 10. Lawrence Marshall, DE Southfield H.S. Marshall has the ability to be dominant at On Deck: 10 To Watch For In 2015 Michigan's coaching staff has already hit the trail for the future, offering a small handful of in-state prospects. All three are among the top 10 players to watch, along with youngsters sporting other big offers at this early stage. 1. Mike Weber 5-11, 206 • RB • Detroit Cass Tech The top player in the state comes from a school familiar to Michigan. Weber rushed for 1,700 yards and 21 touchdowns as a sophomore after missing the first four games with an injury. 2. Brian Cole 6-2, 190 • ATH • Saginaw Heritage Cole's team didn't experience much success — the Hawks went 4-5 in 2012 — but the do-it-all athlete had a breakout season. He could play wide receiver, running back or safety in college. 3. Joshua Alabi 6-5, 260 • DL • Detroit Cass Tech Although Alabi played mostly defense as a sophomore, he will be a full-time starter on the offensive line this fall and that could be his college future. He will step into U-M signee David Dawson's position. 4. Tyriq Thompson 6-1, 200 • S/LB • Detroit King A transfer from Lee's Summit (Mo.) West, the son of former U-M safety Clarence Thompson returned to Detroit for his final two years of high school ball. He could remain in the secondary or grow into a linebacker. 5. Jayru Campbell 6-3, 180 • QB • Detroit Cass Tech Campbell has two state titles — and scholarship offers from the likes of Alabama and Notre Dame — already under his belt. He's improving as a passer, and could move up this list. 6. John Kelly 5-10, 200 • S • Oak Park Kelly does it all for Oak Park, starting at running back and safety, and fills in at various positions on both sides of the ball. His height is the limiting factor, but he should find a college home. 7. Kyonta Stallworth 6-5, 285 • OL • St. Clair Shores South Lake UCLA and Florida were the first two programs to offer the big man from the northeast suburbs of Detroit. He blocks with power and is improving his feet to get even better. 8. Darryl Clemons 6-2, 195 • LB • Detroit Loyola Clemons is overshadowed at Loyola by 2014 teammates Malik McDowell and Ka'John Armstrong, but is a solid player in his own right. He should develop into a well-known recruit when he adds more mass to his frame. 9. Ray Buford Jr. 6-1, 195 • ATH • Southfield Buford was a wide receiver for Southfield as a sophomore, but college coaches have said they like his size for the cornerback position. He'll play there more extensively this fall. 10. Jake Johnson 6-3, 180 • QB • DeWitt Johnson has a good frame to add weight and a smooth release. He gains offseason experience by competing with the Michigan Elite sevenon-seven program. The Wolverine 2013 Football Preview  ■ 263
