USICERINKS.COM NOVEMBER.DECEMBER.2021 / 33 Located in the city of Anoka, Minnesota, the Anoka Area Ice Arena (AAIA) is an incred- ibly important asset that has served the local community since 1981. Being a private not-for-profit organiza- tion, AAIA has served various local youth hockey organizations such as Anoka Area Hockey Association, Andover, Champlin, Elk River and Rogers. In addition to local youth hockey groups, AAIA also provides a home to high-level competitive hockey like Anoka High School boys' and girls' varsity teams. The facility was in des- perate need to replace two aging direct R-22 refrigeration systems (approximately 12,000 lbs. of R-22 total) serving two con- crete rink floors. In April of 2021, AAIA started the six- month long construction phase to replace the two original direct R-22 refrigeration plants with a new centralized ammonia refrigeration plant. Some of the highlights of the project included removal and rein- stallation of the rink dasher boards, demo and removal of the existing refrigeration plants and both concrete rink floors. The installation of the new refrigeration system consisted of new screw compressors, two new concrete rink floors, an oversized condenser, a new electrical distribution panel to feed the new refrigeration system, a new dehumidification unit, and digital controls for the refrigeration system and dehumidification unit. The completion of this project has ensured that Anoka Area Ice Arena will continue to be capable of hosting all ice sports competitions and training as well as maximize the community's ability to generate economic benefits by promoting ice sports programming. 1: Demo and removal of old direct R22 refrigeration system. 2: Saw cutting of existing concrete slab. 3: Removal of old concrete slab and insulation. 4: Installation of new subfloor heat piping. 2 3 4
