LoRaWAN ® Certification Protocol Specification TS009-1.1.0 ©2023 LoRa Alliance ® Page 6 of 26 The authors reserve the right to change specifications without notice. 2 Introduction 159 All messages described in this document are transported as application layer messages on a 160 dedicated port. As such, all unicast messages (uplink or downlink) are encrypted by the 161 LoRaWAN Media Access Control (MAC) layer using the end-device's AppSKey. 162 163 This protocol specification allows the LoRaWAN Certification Test Tool (LCTT) to fully validate 164 compliance of an end-device to the LoRaWAN L2 Specification [TS001] and the LoRaWAN 165 Regional Parameters Specification [RP002] for Class A, B, and C end-devices and end- 166 devices that support the Static Context Header Compression (SCHC) protocol. 167 168 In order for an end-device to be designated "LoRaWAN Certified CM " it SHALL implement this 169 application layer specification and have Port Field (FPort) 224 enabled for the duration of 170 the certification tests. This FPort SHALL be disabled on any device in production. Otherwise, 171 it may intentionally or accidentally be activated to harm the device itself or the networks in its 172 radio coverage. 173 174 The end-device to be certified SHALL be sent to an Authorized Test House (ATH) with FPort 175 enabled for the certification test and will then be returned to the end-device manufacturer for 176 FPort to be disabled. 177 178 The following flow chart describes the process: 179 180 181 Figure 1: Certification process flow chart 182 183 When an Over-the-Air Activation (OTAA) device has connected to the Test Control Layer 184 (TCL, refer to Chapter 3, "Functional Test Description for LoRaWAN Certification") after the 185 Join-Request and Join-Accept frame exchange, the device SHOULD send an uplink message 186 as soon as possible. 187
