LoRaWAN ® LIVE 6 Smart Grid Monitoring with LoRaWAN ® in New Zealand Powerco, a New Zealand utility company, manages the country's 2 nd largest electricity distribution network spanning 28,000 kilometers, including overhead lines and underground cables. Challenge ➢ The challenge was to proactively monitor and swiftly detect any anomalies in various segments of the power grid. The primary objective is to ensure the safety, security, and resilience of the power network. ➢ Additional objective is to have their own Private Network which they have full control of without any future risk of Network shutdowns by public Operators. Solution ➢ Powerco has deployed a large-scale Private LoRaWAN® network, installed on their premises a fully secured private instance of Actility's ThingPark® Enterprise platform. ➢ LoRaWAN Sensors are being installed on power poles, lines, and transformers. These sensors are instrumental in collecting vital data related to the performance and potential faults within the aging grid. Benefit: Enhanced power grid performance, reliability, and efficiency, with full control over their IoT network's life cycle.
