at developing and implementing solutions that address these
critical global challenges. They've shown beyond any doubt
that LoRaWAN can positively impact and support vital human
needs, while also meeting business needs for performance
and profit. This is what I mean when I say that LoRaWAN is
essential to people, planet, and profit; it is unique in its ability
to achieve humanitarian gains and environmental sustainability
while also improving businesses' bottom lines.
LoRaWAN's recognition as an essential technology has also
driven a shift in its market presence. We have moved from
educating about "what" LoRaWAN is to companies wanting to
know "how" to deploy LoRaWAN. How to augment their existing
devices, upgrade platforms to integrate with LoRaWAN, find
LoRaWAN devices and partners, determine requirements, and
scale their LoRaWAN solutions. These interactions highlight
the changes we're seeing in the market, across all levels of the
buyer's journey. As end-users move from exploratory stages
and proof of concepts into massive adoption of LoRaWAN,
integrators and solutions providers across a variety of
industries are intensifying their sales efforts and growing
LoRaWAN deployments exponentially.
Perhaps the best news for our ecosystem is that LoRaWAN's
strengths are the sweet spot of IoT. Market projections
indicate that 75% of the IoT market will use LoRaWAN and
25% cellular technologies. This is because LoRaWAN's
strengths directly meet the majority of IoT requirements,
which include battery-operated devices, long battery life,
long-distance transmissions, low data rates, low cost, and
high signal penetration. The remaining 25 percent of IoT
applications require high bandwidth requirements, like audio,
video, and ultra-low latency, which is not what LoRaWAN is
designed to support. I mention this because staying laser
focused on the 75 percent of the market where LoRaWAN
is truly fit-for-purpose is critical to our strategy.
This means we will continue to evolve and enhance
LoRaWAN, while staying focused on our core strengths ––
which creates unlimited opportunities for our members and
the broader LoRaWAN ecosystem. Nothing will distract us or
pull us off course from reaching our vision of Empowering
sustainable IoT to maximize efficiency, improve quality of life
and protect the planet's resources.
We've fulfilled this vision with some of the technical advance-
ments introduced this year: support for IPv6 over LoRaWAN
which accelerates onboarding Internet Protocol (IP)-based
applications; our relay feature, which extends the LoRaWAN
coverage beyond its current physical limits; and the payload
codec API, which eases integration of application platforms
with LoRaWAN networks. Another major area of investment for
the LoRa Alliance is continuously augmenting our certification
program. This year we significantly expanded self-testing
and ease of use of the LoRaWAN Certification Test Tool and
added support for critical technologies, including now
certifying devices for IPv6 over LoRaWAN.
The energy and excitement for the future of LoRaWAN is
palpable. I want to invite everyone who is deploying LoRaWAN
or considering it to join us in March 2023 in Orlando at
LoRaWAN Live, and October 2023 in Tokyo. The LoRaWAN
Live program includes educational training, and significant
opportunities for business development and collaboration.
LoRaWAN Live days offer the best opportunity to hear the
latest LoRaWAN news, network with industry leaders and
potential business partners, find the right tools, and develop
the know-how to bring your own solutions to market.
As you'll see in this report, 2022 was an amazing year across
all metrics, and I know that 2023 will be even stronger. I cannot
thank our members enough for their dedication and hard
work to advance the LoRaWAN standard. Our members
are personally making a difference and changing the world.
Together with this incredible ecosystem, we will continue to
improve the world in ways no one ever imagined possible.
