6 LoRa Alliance ® The capital expense of hardware and installation is amortized over a much longer service life, and ongoing operational expenses are a fraction of what they would be with battery-powered devices (since technicians aren't constantly rolling trucks to replace batteries). The total cost of ownership per year drops significantly, making the business case even more attractive[3]. Essentially, energy harvesting ensures that the value of the initial capital investment is preserved and extended over time, rather than having that value erode quickly due to battery failures or maintenance costs. From both a technical and business perspective, energy-harvesting devices create compounding benefits: Maintenance-Free Operation: By drawing power from ambient sources like sunlight, devices can run for years without manual intervention, greatly reducing labor costs and system downtime[2][3]. This is especially important for large-scale deployments or sensors in hard-to-reach places (ceilings, industrial sites, rural areas) where frequent maintenance is impractical. Extended Device Lifespan: With no finite battery to limit service life, sensors can reliably operate 10+ years under proper conditions[10]. This longevity means the devices remain useful far longer, allowing organizations to maximize the return on capital and treat the network as a long-lived asset. Lower Total Cost of Ownership: Although the upfront cost is slightly higher for solar-enabled devices, the overall TCO is markedly lower when factoring in saved maintenance, fewer replacements, and less downtime[3]. As deployments scale to hundreds or thousands of sensors, these savings multiply, often dwarfing the initial cost of the hardware. Sustainability and Compliance: Eliminating disposable batteries aligns with corporate sustainability goals and helps meet regulatory requirements on electronic waste and carbon footprint[13]. Using renewable energy sources also supports carbon-reduction targets and environmental reporting. These benefits illustrate why the industry is moving decisively toward battery-free or hybrid energy solutions for IoT[14]. There is, practically speaking, "no reason why devices need to be powered by disposable batteries" for most use cases, as one
