Advanced level riders should have a confirmed, correct, supple, and secure independent seat. Advanced level riders should have the strength and stabil- ity to maintain an independent seat in various jumping and galloping positions for sustained intervals as needed for both the show jumping and cross-country phases. It is the independent seat, in all jumping and galloping positions, which permits: • The rider to maintain elastic contact and connection throughout the jumping effort. • The use of independent, coordinated aids to: • Generate balance, energy, and the correct speed, • Ride an accurate track and line, • Lengthen or shorten the stride. • To move between galloping and jumping positions without loss of rhythm, balance, or focus. • To instinctually and seamlessly adjust their position in support of their horse's balance, loss of balance, or way of going, or to influence the shape of the horse's jump and the speed/balance on landing, without interfering with the horse's jumping effort.
