11 Firmware certification alignment Adhering to the LoRaWAN MAC specification is not optional—it's critical for interoperability. Firmware must undergo thorough testing to validate behaviors such as: Correct handling of retransmissions, Responsiveness to MAC commands Failover mechanisms that preserve battery in adverse conditions. Certification includes practical test cases covering these areas, ensuring that devices perform consistently under real-world network stress and align with ecosystem standards. LoRaWAN network capacity simulation test A single 8-channel gateway could accommodate approximately 1 million daily messages, which translates to around 300k devices transmitting three times per day, matching the performance requirement for successful meter reading rate of 98%. With gateway diversity, capacity increases by roughly 60%. This test was done with the following assumptions: device density is 20k devices per square km, packet size 52B, additional attenuation of 15db to mimic indoor environment and NbTrans set to 3. In practice, typical deployments of only a few thousand devices per gateway use just a fraction of this capacity. Using SF5 and SF6 (RP2- 1.0.5) opens up another capacity level by increasing single 8-channel gateway capacity greater than two times. This is the baseline capacity, while other proposals (lightweight downlinks, optimizing ADR) described here in the whitepaper would only increase it further. This leaves significant space for future expansion and allows multiple projects to coexist in the same coverage area without compromising performance. Conclusion LoRaWAN has proven itself as a robust and scalable technology for smart utility metering, and network capacity is an important factor in ensuring reliable performance at scale. The findings of the Network Capacity Task Force highlight that capacity improvement depends on multiple actions, through a layered approach that integrates infrastructure design, efficient spectrum use, and network level techniques such as optimized Adaptive Data Rate algorithms.
