KERRIGAN, BREES GET
PICKED
ESPN.com unveiled its "allBCS-era" teams last week, choosing players from each conference. The BCS Era lasted from
1998-2013.
For the Big Ten, ESPN.com
fered early predictions for the Big
Ten's 2014 season, and Purdue
landed last in the new West Division.
Just a refresher: The division
includes Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, Northwestern
and Illinois along with the Boilermakers.
Of Purdue, writer Steve
TOO EARLY
Lassan said: "After hitting rock
Athlon magazine of- bottom last year, Purdue should
of the men on this list,
Kerrigan never played
for any BCS bowl teams
at Purdue." Still, he was a
first-team All-American as
a senior and tied for the
NCAA record for forced
fumbles (14) and had 33.5
sacks in his career.
Tom Campbell
Athlon magazine picks Darrell Hazell's Boilermakers to finish last in the new West Division.
bloggers Adam Rittenberg and Brian Bennett
selected a pair of Boilermakers on their list that
included one player for
each position on offense,
defense and special
teams.
Drew Brees was the
pick at quarterback, and
Ryan Kerrigan was one of
the two "starters" at defensive end.
Brees was a no-brainer after finishing his career with league records
for passing (11,792),
touchdown passes (90),
completions (1,026) and
attempts (1,678).
Kerrigan may have
been a bit of a surprise
considering, "unlike most
show signs of improvement. …
Running back Akeem Hunt and
receivers DeAngelo Yancey and
Cameron Posey will be the top
playmakers on offense. … The
defense is a concern. … There's
a handful of significant losses on
defense."
ESPN.com had its "way-tooearly" preseason top 25, and four
of Purdue's 2014 opponents were
on it.
