THE NORTH SHORE SUMMER, WITH ITS LONG days that coax us to open our windows and let the warm breezes waft through our homes. Rigid school and work schedules give way to free-range days of trips to the beach, long hikes in the woods, and grilling on the back deck with family and friends. In this issue we celebrate our relaxed summer style. For example, Lisa Duffy, owner and creative director at Andover- based Savoir Faire Home, designs the interiors of a shoreline home that embodies the very best of easy, beautiful waterfront living—and, of course, keeps its focus on the gorgeous view. Olson Lewis + Architects designs a coastal home for a delightful couple and their family set on the Atlantic in Beverly—and the property has everything the own- ers were looking for: an ocean backdrop (complete with Salem's Misery Islands in the distance), a path leading down to the beach, and enough space for a pool and outdoor entertaining areas. The house is topped with a widow's walk and a mermaid weathervane—what could say summer style more than this! Interior designer Holly Gagne, architect Ben Nutter, and Jewett Farms + Co. create a new kitchen using reclaimed barnboard, which offers color and texture that only the natural elements of time, weather, and sun can render. The aesthetic is simple rustic elegance in this welcoming space. We also highlight the Martha Stewart auction that took place at Kaminski Auctions this past spring. Props from the domestic goddess's empire included cookbooks, glassware, cake stands, crystal vases, egg cups, brown- ware, and woven baskets at this two-day event. Those whose bids were accepted took home a well curated piece of hospitality history—now, that is a good thing. Speaking of history, writer Robert Pushkar explores the origins of wicker—the most popular and enduring summer furniture style. It turns out that wicker has deep roots right here on the North Shore. In 1855, Cyrus Wakefield formed the Wakefield Rattan Company, set- tling his huge manufacturing operation in South Read- ing and creating beautiful wicker pieces for porches and summer homes around New England.
