8 SUMMER 2019 Nancy Berry, Editor We hope you are inspired by this issue of Northshore Home. Share your home story with us. Send it to nberry@nshoremag.com. . M Y COUSIN AND DEAR FRIEND LIZ NAPOLITANO sent me a short story written by her son, Luke, for the Courant, Andover's oldest arts and literary publication. In his story, Luke describes a house where he played as child during the carefree months of July and August, with days spent running in the landscape among the ancient weathered elms, pick- ing raspberries and blackberries in the midsummer sun, his imagination conjuring woodland sprites dancing among the flowers. He recollects evenings running down long halls, hopping up and down winding back stairs, and playing hide-and-seek with his sister and cousins while the adults sat and conversed and laughed in the dining room twinkling with candlelight, the sturdy wooden ta- ble strewn with half-eaten bowls of pasta and red wine glasses—a scene of comfort and conviviality. He personifies this special old place, describing the warmth and love the house had for the children visit- ing. I love this story, for it is a story written about my home near the ocean. I love the impression the house made on him—a warm and loving place that protected him and fostered his imagination. A true happy place. In this issue, we visit homes that offer the comfort and security described in Luke's story—happy places that speak to the personalities of the owners and that welcome guests with open arms. For instance, Olson Lewis + Architects renovates a series of small rooms in a home, revolutionizing the living space, while interior designer Kristina Crestin takes the interiors to a whole new level by creating a comfortable family environ- ment. Soothing sofas and ottoman puffs centered around a massive stone fireplace offer a haven for the family to come and relax and play. Kennerknecht Design Group transforms a 1902 house into a breathtaking and lively space full of pops of color. Large upholstered chairs and sofas create won- derful cozy places that entice guests to sit and relax, while the landscape is the perfect place for children to ramble and explore. Architect Laine Jones and interior designer Lisa Duffy team up to create a beach-inspired home in Salis- bury, the goal being to design a relaxed home in which the owners can also entertain family and friends. As Jones expresses it: "To me, it's more about the feelings evoked than anything else." I can't help but smile and know that my home has evoked feelings of joy in those who have visited.
