By Margaret Brand The Review-Mirror Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands council accepted a $5,389,000 tender for the construction of their new municipal complex Mon- day night. M. Sullivan & Son Lim- ited, is set to bring in their equipment this week. It was the lowest of seven bids, almost $1 mil- lion lower than the highest bid of $6,388,888. In a recorded vote of council Velma Kelsey was the lone councilor to vote against accepting the ten- der for the new complex. "It's a big relief. We are all looking forward to the whole process of all of us getting under one roof. It's exciting times," said clerk Vanessa Latimer. Public Works and the Lansdowne Fire Hall will be located at the north end of the site on Cty. Rd 3 with the administration building located on the south side of the 20-acre site. Lehman, who, among other things has been a dri- ving force behind bringing Smart Board technology to the Elgin school, has accepted a position with the Limestone District School Board at Sydenham High School. "On one hand it is cer- tainly exciting to go to a new board and new school with different opportuni- ties, on the other hand it is sad to leave Rideau. Rideau is a place with excellent staff and students and wonderful parents in a very supportive communi- ty, so it is a unique envi- ronment where students are very respectful," Lehman said. He added that the deci- sion to move to a school closer to Kingston had a lot to do with his family situa- tion as his wife works in that city and they eventual- ly hope to retire there. Lehman has about 10 years left before reaching retire- ment age. "Rideau has been a great place to work and it was a tough decision for my wife and I to make," he said. Lehman came to Rideau from Prince of Wales Pub- lic School in Brockville. Elgin was his first princi- pal position in a high school setting. And, while Sydenham High School has about twice the amount of students as Rideau – approximately 900 - the somewhat rural setting of it will offer similarities. Meanwhile, the UCDSB has appointed Arlie Kirk- land to replace Lehman. Kirkland is no stranger to Rideau, since this is where she spent time as a guidance counselor and teacher from the start of her career almost 40 years ago. The appointment to RDHS has not been well received by Kirkland who has been the principal at Thousand Islands Sec- ondary School (TISS) for 10 years where she enjoys large popularity. Kirkland is heading into her final year before retire- ment and wants to stay at TISS where she has been involved in the school's anniversary celebrations set for next year. She has hired A lawyer to represent her in her efforts to stay at TISS. Leeds-Grenville municipalities get $24 million boost Thirty infrastructure projects were announced for municipalities in Leeds Grenville last week. The Township of Rideau Lakes, The Town- ship of Leeds and the Thousand Islands, Athens and Westport are among the United Counties municipalities sharing the $24 million — $12 mil- lion each from the provin- cial and federal govern- ments. With the municipal con- tribution total cost of the combined projects is $36,312,779. The Township of Rideau Lakes projects include the rehabilitation of William and Matthew Streets in Delta for $211,693 and a renovation and addition to the South Elmsley Hall for $289,500. (Figures are for total costs) Westport's projects include $225,000 for sewage pumping station upgrades, and $207,000 for the closure of the waste disposal site. Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands will be creating a fire hall and combined training facility at the Lyndhurst adminis- trative office for $2,000,000. They will also be rehabilitating Maple Grove Road for $840,000. The Lans- downe Drinking Water System will get $962,000 in improvements. Athens Town Hall will be undergong a $195,000 rehabilitation. Township breaking ground on $5.4 million building Monday Shillington Park became a mecca for cyclists participating in the Ottawa Bicycle Club's annual tour last weekend. The North Crosby Recreation Committee's on site snack bar in the hall earned $2300 towards the group's efforts to add boards and nets to their new multi-purpose concrete pad.
