road. Staff will then be better equipped to assist and aid attorneys in following best practices. ROAD TEST AND FOLLOW UP Conduct a “road test” to review the firm system and observe how users are following the newly created best practices. As with any attempt to introduce a new process, education and follow-up need to be continuous and ongoing. Do not expect changes overnight. Regular communications and training on best practices are needed to reinforce and encourage adoption. When possible, follow up with users on an individual basis, so you can address any questions and tailor further training to meet a user’s specific needs. Individual follow-up often has a bigger impact, as users are often desensitized to mass e-mail messages and group training. Having “traffic officers” monitor the flow of information and enforce best practices will make users realize that compliance is expected and cannot be ignored. REACH YOUR DESTINATION As drivers on the KM highway, attorneys need to know the rules of the road to steer the flow of information effectively within the firm. Best practices show attorneys why they need to contribute and share information in firm systems and how to do it. When attorneys add information with accurate metadata to firm systems, firms are able to retrieve and share this information in strategic ways. Best practices as a part of an overall KM strategy will support your firm in delivering efficient, high quality legal services to its clients.
