A CLASS 1 SWEEP By Dan Sanchez Photos by GetSomePhoto Cody And Wes Parkhouse Get Back-To-Back Wins It was not an easy win for Class 1 racers Cody Parkhouse and his dad Wes. While the team came to the 53rd SCORE Baja 1000 race with the first starting position, after winning the class at the SCORE Baja 500, they didn’t take anything for granted. “I started the race, and we began picking off several of the SCORE TT Legend trucks around the first 12-13 miles, said Cody Parkhouse. “Then we ran up on one of those trucks, and in doing so, we hit a rock and folded up a wheel that wrapped over the brake caliper.” Three Class 1 vehicles passed Parkhouse, but he and the team got the car back on the road. The team moved up on the course, passing two more vehicles. “We then got some clean air along the coast, and we ran down Broc Dickerson and Gabriel Torres who had got ahead of us,” said Parkhouse. “We were third in class on the course and were about 100-yards from Dickerson when he pulled off to pit. Then Torres pitted, and we were first in class on the course.” Parkhouse refueled and switched drivers, but Dickerson passed them again in the process. “My dad got in the car around race mile 300, and it went back and forth like this for the lead until dad passed when Dickerson pitted again. We remained first on the road and over the radio heard Dickerson had rolled.” After the battle with Dickerson, the Parkhouse team had a flat that was quickly changed, but the spare wasn’t properly strapped in. “One of the spares came loose, and the strap got into the engine’s serpentine belt resulting in more downtime,” said Parkhouse. “Fortunately, this was in the San Felipe area, and our crew was close. We, fortunately, got it repaired quickly.” Without any further issues, co-driver Roger Starkey Jr got into the car at race mile 685 and drove it home to the finish line. “Somewhere along the way, we lost fifth-gear in the transmission, so the car could only top-out at 100-mph,” said Parkhouse. “It cost us a little more time, but we had a clean finish. I say every year that the race is the toughest, but this SCORE Baja 1000 was that. We won the SCORE Baja 500 and now the SCORE Baja 1000, and that means a lot to us.”
