JASON MCNEIL GETS ANOTHER CHECKERED FLAG The 2021 SCORE Baja 400 Was Rough But Rewarding For Trophy Truck Spec Driver Jason McNeil Story by Stuart Bourdon Photography by Get Some Photo Jason McNeil has been racing off-road for several years and found success driving a few different vehicles, including SCORE Trophy Trucks. His most recent triumphs have been in the driver’s seat of the FiberwerX Racing Trophy Truck Spec. “The class is no joke– there is some very serious competition on-course, and some ‘young guns’ are entering the class. I’ve been racing a long time, and the Trophy Truck Spec class is just as competitive as any on the course.” The numbers confirm McNeil’s assertion. The first three races of the 2021 SCORE Off-Road Racing season had nearly the same entry levels in Trophy Truck Spec as the Trophy Truck class. The splits between the top three Trophy Truck Spec class finishers in the two races leading up to the 2nd Annual SCORE Baja 400 Presented by VP Racing Fuels were 10 minutes at the San Felipe 250 and three minutes for the SCORE Baja 500. In addition, a Trophy Truck Spec finished 12th overall in the SCORE Baja 250 and 6th overall (McNeil) at the SCORE Baja 500. McNeil has a lot of racing experience that finally led him to qualify in second place at the SCORE Baja 400 and ultimately a class win. In his early years of racing, he competed with the late Pete Sohren. “Pete had a great influence on my racing career from the very beginning,” said McNeil. “He opened the door to the SCORE Trophy Truck world for me. We raced together a lot– especially those last few years. We had a good time, and he taught me a lot. I believe that much of my success in racing is due to Pete’s mentoring.” After crossing the finish line first in his class, McNeil had a tough time on the course but managed to pull through for a clean win. “We had a long day, but it was a good one,” he said. “We never got out of the truck, no flats, no problems. It seems like the racecourses are getting more difficult than ever before. A new section up near Mike’s (Mike’s Sky Rancho) was extremely technical. There were some incredibly dusty sections in the early parts of the race which brought visibility down to near nothing, and that is always challenging at high speed.” McNeil’s win at the 2nd SCORE Baja 400 presented by VP Racing gives the FiberwerX Racing team its second win of the year (he finished first in class at the SCORE Baja 500). He also finished 10th overall and now has a first-in-class spot for the upcoming 54th BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 1000 Presented by 4 Wheel Parts in November. McNeil gave credit where credit was due, “I was super stoked to be first (Trophy Truck Spec) across the finish line and I can’t thank my crew enough for all their hard work and support.”Check out McNeil’s current stats on SCORE’s Fan Pages here: SJ
