ENSURE LONG-TERM SUCCESS BY WINNING HEARTS AND MINDS “Many young lawyers erroneously think their use of Word, e-mail, PowerPoint, and computer games provide the technical skills required to be an effective advocate. While knowledge of these standard programs may alleviate some technophobia, these are not the computer skills needed to be a skilled and competent lawyer in the rapidly evolving legal world....” — Jeff Flax ABANet, Law Practice Management Today (2005) There is an assumption that attorneys and staff should be provided with foundational training and then they’ll figure the rest out. Yes, attorneys are bright and staff typically have great skill sets, but technology is moving at an unprecedented clip and workflow processes are constantly on the run to adjust to or accommodate new technology. Staff and attorneys today are experiencing daily a kind of technology “shock and awe.” Firms and their technology departments can go a long way to bring about calm to the battlefield by having a strategic plan and by rethinking the role of the trainer. After selecting the hardware, testing the accuracy of the artillery and maneuvering the troops, it is now time to deploy the solution. Your battle strategy should include a comprehensive plan to improve efficiencies and ensure the longevity of the application for an individual practice group or the entire firm, which includes giving ownership of a product to the trainer.
