134 ■ THE WOLFPACKER BY MATT CARTER N C State is expected to finish eighth among ACC teams and 41st nationally in this year's final standings of the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup, which measures the suc- cess of athletic programs across all sports. The Pack's goal is to be a consistent top-25 athletic department. While not reaching that level in 2013-14, there were still memorable moments on the field. Here is a list of some of the best team and individual showings from the past year in NC State sports. ■ Team Of The Year Women's golf enjoyed a historically strong season for the program, culminat- ing with an impressive performance at the NCAA Championships May 20-23 in Tulsa, Okla. NCSU reached the biggest stage by ty- ing eventual national champion Duke for third place at the NCAA East Regional. After a shaky start in Tulsa, the Wolfpack golfers proved they belonged among the nation's best. NC State was 23rd out of 24 teams after round one, but climbed back to tie for 10th in the end — the best finish in school his- tory. That was State's eighth top-10 finish in 10 tournaments this year. The Pack was top five in half those events, including a third-place finish at the ACC Champion- ships April 17-19 in Greensboro, N.C. NC State will be hoping for more suc- cess in 2014-15. Rising senior Augusta James is expected back after leading the Pack with an average round score of 72.6. ■ Coach Of The Year In his first year leading the women's basketball program, Wes Moore guided the Pack to a season that far exceeded expecta- tions. State was picked in the preseason to finish 10th in the league. NC State finished fourth in the powerhouse ACC and reached the top 10 in the Associated Press poll for the first time since 2001. NC State was ranked 12 straight weeks to end the year and notched four wins over top-20 ranked opponents, including even- tual Final Four participant Maryland. A shorthanded Pack squad that suffered key injuries late in the season lost to a hot BYU THE BEST AND THE BRIGHTEST Senior Brittany Marchand helped the women's golf team to the most successful season in pro- gram history, which culminated with a 10th-place finish at the NCAA Championships.
