Total Alkalinity (TA)
is the measure of how many
alkaline substances there are in the spa or hot tub water. It is
closely related to pH. When Total Alkalinity is in the correct
range, it prevents rapid pH changes and stabilises the pH
level.
Low Total Alkalinity can cause metals to corrode, cause
staining, the water can turn green and give eye irritation.
We can also have pH bounce (pH going up and down,
seemingly at random).
High Total Alkalinity causes difficulty in adjusting the pH, the
water becomes cloudy and the sanitiser loses its efficiency as
a disinfectant.
The recommended Total Alkalinity levels for your spa should
be kept at 90 – 110ppm (parts per million).
Water Hardness is a measure of how "hard" or "soft"
the water is. If too soft it can become corrosive to metal
parts. If too hard it can lead to scale build up.
Recommended Levels
Bromine 3.00 – 4.00 ppm
pH 7.4 – 7.6
Total Alkalinity 90 – 110 ppm
Water Hardness 180 – 250 ppm
(ppm means - Parts per million)
