Outside of the transaxle housing 5/1600 cars often run lightened and polished CV's with hardened cages and 300M gun-drilled axles. CHASSIS Class 5/1600 rules require the car be built using an original 1960's to mid-1970s and newer Volkswagen "Beetle" type body and chassis pan. There are many man hours that go into preparing the floor pan for the roll cage, and preparing the car body for the buildup. Thankfully you will be using far fewer feet of 4130 Chromoly steel tubing to fabricate a safe and solid roll cage than is required for other vehicle types. However, when it comes to building your roll cage there is no point in cutting corners, and for safety's sake, it's got to be done right. In order to save time and money, you can look to buy a 5/1600 without an engine, drive train, or suspension, but with a properly engineered and fabricated roll cage attached to the pan. You will still be building the race car from semi- rolling chassis, but you have the advantage of saving many hours of wrestling with the tube bender and making accurate, strong, welds if that's not your best skill set. In any event, a Class 5/1600 chassis is a gutted VW Bug with a roll cage and a nice paint job. That right there is why this class can be economical and competitive 055 SCORE JOURNAL
