methods that can protect the air filter from over contamination. "We manufacture what we call a Powerlid, which installs in place of the OE Airbox lid," says K&N's Jump. "It features K&N pleated filter material in place of the lid which greatly extends the service intervals of the filters as well as offering increased airflow. We have actually completed the SCORE Baja 1,000 with it, a total of 1,200 miles without changing a filter, only replacing a couple of Powerlids." CALCULATING THE RIGHT FILTER SIZE FOR THE JOB According to the experts, take the CFM number that the engine needs and double the requirement in filter volume to give your team the best chance to finish the race without changing the air filter(s). For high horsepower V8 engines, air filtration experts recommend running large air filter systems as a starting point. "We would recommend either running two 8x15-inch air cleaners or one 10x20-inch air cleaner. If you run two 8x15 (rated around 575 CFM each) the total CFM provided to the motor is 1150. One 10x20 will provide approximately 900 CFM," Howe said. Whether you choose to run one or two filters, the primary goal is to make sure your engine will have more than enough volume of clean air flowing to the engine at the end of the race. "For most V8 engines we recommend running two of our canisters," says Cappos. "Because of the complicated flow path through our canisters (which is a restriction), we want to keep the air speed up in them to sling out the dust. So two canisters are generally required. We make two versions that differ in length, which adds to the surface area of media. If you plan ahead to make them fit, the longer canisters offer more service life. Most LS style engines have a single throttle body that allows the inlet air to be tied together with a 'Y' and let the canisters live somewhere convenient for servicing." Cappos says that a "Y" junction is preferred rather than a "T" style junction because the "Y" junction is better for high-speed air. FILTRATION TECHNOLOGY FOR DESERT RACING Since 1953, most of the research and development in air filtration and intake systems has been conducted by organizations who supply filters to heavy-equipment manufacturers and the military. Companies like Donaldson and Mahle-Aftermarket. Therefore, companies dedicated to providing better filtration to desert racers utilize some of the same air filtration due to the testing that has already been done. "We use the same filter that has been winning races since 1985," says Howe. THE UMP 1090 5L IS A 8"X19"CANISTER, DESIGNED WITH A 5" DIAMETER INLET OPENING AND 4-INCH MOUTH TO THE ENGINE FOR EXTREME RACE APPLICATIONS. SOME CANISTER/INTAKE SETUPS ARE TIGHT. THIS UMP SYSTEM IS ON A FORD BRONCO THAT SHOWS YOU CAN GET TWO BIG CANISTERS TO PROTECT A V8 ENGINE WITH LIMITED MOUNTING SPACE. 042 SCORE JOURNAL
