He promptly called the station to get the contact information of the person running the NSMT auction, which he attended in October of that year. By February of 2010, he owned the theatre. By July, he had put on his first show, Gypsy. The owner of many movie theaters and another live performance theatre, Theatre by the Sea in Rhode Island, Hanney came to NSMT with years of experience under his belt. "Movie theaters are very similar. People come, they buy tickets, they buy food, they sit down, and watch. The difference is I don't make what's on the screen. [With live theatre] I do all those other things and I make what's on the 'screen'…. I have a creative eye and I like doing that [production] stuff, and I now get to do that," he says.
