BY SARAH G. LEVINE Beverly's North Shore Music Theatre turns 60 this year, thanks, in great part, to producer Bill Hanney. Stage Presence photographs by Elise Sinagra The sign marking the entrance to North Shore Music Theatre (NSMT) peeks out from behind towering trees and is the only visual distur- bance in the woods surrounding the theatre. The setting is one of many things that make attendees feel as if they are entering another world, right in the middle of Beverly. The building that houses the theatre resembles a circus tent with scalloped edges and bright red doors. A veranda dotted with cabanas and benches shaded by large plumes from potted plants sets the scene before guests even see the stage. Inside, the décor, right down to the marble tiles in the bathrooms, was chosen by owner/producer Bill Hanney. When he bought the theatre in 2010, he decided to com- pletely redo it, in part, he says, to reassure people that he would not allow it to go under again. He says, "I wanted to tell people, 'I'm making an investment and I'm putting my name on it….' That's what I want them to know." It's because of Hanney that NSMT is here today to celebrate its 60th anniversary.
