I'm pretty sure every one of us (in the NHL) has memories from our childhood of playing with your friends and I think that's why outdoor hockey is so special." This Luverne player is ready for outdoor action. (Photo submitted by Luverne Hockey Association) 17 "I think playing outside is such a healthy environment. Even though I'm in coaching, I realize that it is healthy when coaches and parents aren't there. I think it is important to have a good balance of skill training and coaching indoors. But there should be time for kids to be with their friends outside." "I grew up in a fantastic neighborhood where we had an outdoor rink. I just wanted to be out there with my buddies. We'd go outside and play outdoor hockey, really until the neighbors would get tired of hearing pucks hit the post and call the police. They'd come and say, "all right boys, time to turn the lights off." We'd go inside and wait until the next day to do it again." Everyone plays, including my grandpa, who just turned 82. I think pick- up hockey is beneficial for kids because it's obviously a fun time to mess around with your buddies, but it can also increase a player's puck skills because they are given the chance to try out a bunch of new moves."
