GOLD AND BLACK ILLUSTRATED OLUME 26, ISSUE 5 36 to "not let making a living prevent you from making a life" certainly holds true with Malone. "I think it's been important for me never to allow my job to define who I am," Malone said. "I don't believe in that. I think that it gives you a lot of false prophets when you feel as though what you're doing is more important than other things in your life. I've seen too many guys really crash because of that. I hope that never happens to me. "(Football has) been a major part of my life, my whole life. And yet it's a career. It's what I do for work. The nice thing about football is that it can be a pas- sion, even though it is a job. And yet at the end of the day, it doesn't make a great family member, it doesn't make a great wife. I'm very lucky to have that in my life, but I don't really count on it as being something that I have to go home to every night." I n September 2009, tight end David Thomas learned he'd been traded: He was headed to New Orleans from New England. He didn't have much time to prepare for a move — the preseason was starting just over a week after the deal was made. So Thomas had to leave his wife and two sons in the Northeast for a new job and a new life. He was in New Orleans for more than a month without his family. Terry Malone, Thomas' position coach, knew the dif- ficulties of facing a new situation, acclimating to a new Tom Campbell Terry Malone has experienced the pinnacle of success in coaching, winning national championships at the college and NFL levels, but he got into coaching to shape lives. And many say he has done just that. "We can give without loving, but we can't love without giving. In fact, love is nothing unless we give it to someone." — John Wooden
