t takes a serious
commitment for a company
like Toyota Motor Co. to
enter into a multi-year
sponsorship with a veteran
racer like BJ Baldwin. So
when the news broke, and
Baldwin introduced his new
Toyota Tundra TRD Trophy
Truck, the desert racing
community was delighted
that an OE would take a
passionate interest in a driver
and a sport that has not seen
this level of commitment for
several decades. "We had been
talking for a year, and things
got serious about six months
ago in terms of organizing a
partnership," said Baldwin.
This is definitely not the
first time Toyota has had a
serious interest in desert racing
competition. The company
has a 34-year relationship with
off-road racing legend Ivan
Stewart, an off-road racing
heritage that dates back to
the 1980s that racked up 304
