THE AUTHORITY ON PURDUE ATHLETICS VOLUME 22, EX 3 • SEPT. 14, 2011 Ready To Rebound Hope Thinks Purdue Will Be OK BY STACY CLARDIE SClardie@GoldandBlack.com T here was only pre-snap penalty on of- fense, a delay for which Purdue offensive coordinator Gary Nord took the blame. There weren't any turnovers, snap- ping a streak of 14 consecutive games in which the Boilermakers committed at least one. There weren't any mistakes lining up on offense or missed signals. The defensive line was "reckless and physical," helping create two sacks, a fumble and a safety. All signs of improvement from Week 1 to Week 2 for Boilermaker football. But, clearly, there's still a long way to go, coming off a stunning 24-22 loss at Rice Saturday. Against the Owls, Purdue's defense continually got gashed over the middle for big plays, allowing a pair of long third downs to be converted on 30- and 35-yard catches. Against the Owls, the defense com- mitted three penalties on third down that resulted in first downs. Against the Owls, the offense allowed four sacks and managed to convert only 6-of-18 third downs. Against the Owls, a bad alignment and missed assignment resulted in a would-be game-winning 31-yard field goal to be blocked. At least Purdue will have a chance to correct some things this week against Southeast Missouri State. GBIprint.com GoldandBlack.com Purdue coach Danny Hope has confidence that his team can correct its errors from a 24-22 loss last week at Rice and respond with a victory against Southeast Missouri State. Not that making adjustments and ex- ecuting against FCS school SEMO will give a true gauge of improvement. Still, a victory — especially a rout — could serve to give Purdue players a boost of confidence. "You have to make sure that you rec- ognize why it is that you weren't success- ful and then go out there and do some- thing about it," Coach Danny Hope said. "One of the things that we talk about is preparing all the way 'til game time. So if you go into a game and you make mis- Tom Campbell takes, did you really understand exactly what it was you were supposed to do? Did we really get the teaching part of it done? Learner didn't learn it, and the teacher didn't teach it. So we went into the game with some things that we thought we had a handle on and we didn't execute as well, so you look at how that happened and you make sure that doesn't happen again. "I think that would be a good sign for our football team this week, to make sure that they were preparing all the way up to game time. Pass offense and pass defense are the priorities, Hope said. But the pass defense, which ranks 11th in the Big Ten by allow- ing 286 yards per game, could be tough to see an improvement this week against the Redhawks. SEMO runs the option and its quarterback hasn't been a major threat throwing the ball during his career. GOLD & BLACK ILLUSTRATED • VOLUME 22, EXPRESS 3 • 1
