Township of Rideau Lakes electors in Bastard and Burgess won't be going to the polls next month to decide who will be representing them at the council table. Former Bastard and Burgess councillor Rob Dunfield was acclaimed for the post after he became the only candi- date. Last week before the close of nominations on May 31, Paula Banks, the only other candidate to submit a nomination with- drew her candidacy. Dunfield was sworn into office at Monday's council meeting and was back in the same seat he occupied during the 2010 to 2014 term. Council could have appointed someone to fill the seat but decided to hold an election which would have seen the new councilor sit from August 2017 until the election in October 2018. At a meeting in April when council decided how they would fill the seat Banks had encouraged council to let electors decide who they wanted to represent them and to hold an election despite the cost. "It would also be the truest test of what the peo- ple of this ward want. Democracy is not cheap or easy but it is something that we need to protect, value and respect," she said. Both candidates ran for the current council in 2014. Banks ran for coun- cilor and Dunfield ran for mayor. Banks also ran against Dunfield for Bas- tard and Burgess council- lor in the 2010 election. Dunfield lost to Mayor Ron Holman in a three- way race that included Don Wills. He has indicat- ed he may run for mayor again in 2018. The withdrawal of Banks' nomination won't save the township all of the costs of the election for the township which has already paid around $3700 for licensing of software to manage the voting list. She began her career with the Lanark County Board of Education full- time in 1989 as an elemen- tary school teacher.
