Industrial production increased 1.1% in April, and the Federal Reserve revised Febru- ary and March figures, which had been estimated as both unchanged, as up 0.4% and down 0.6%, respectively. Housing starts were up 2.6% in April over March and 29.9% over April 2011. Permits authorized for future residential construction fell 7% from March but were up 23.7% above April 2011. 0 N Carrier Sentiment Index down in April 2009 2010 2011 2012 For-hire trucking companies added 1,800 payroll jobs in April, according to the latest esti- mates from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. BLS revised preliminary March figures downward by 500 jobs, so the drop in March was 2,500 jobs. Payroll employment in for-hire trucking is up by 38,500 jobs, or 3%, from April 2011. Employment is up by 99,600 jobs, or 8.1%, from the bottom in March 2010, but it remains 119,600 jobs, or 8.2%, below the peak in Janu- ary 2007. 6.52 in April 1 = WORST 10 = BEST 72% As reported in the April 2012 edition of the Randall- Reilly MarketPulse Report, the Carrier Sentiment Index for April was 6.52 – down from the 6.74 reading in March. The index assesses the month on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the carrier's worst month and 10 being the best. The index level for carriers with more than 100 power units was 6.50 (compared to 6.89 in March), while the level for those with 10 to 100 power units was 6.57 (compared to 6.39).
