MAKING THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENTS WORK FOR YOUR FLEET BY AARON HUFF base online through a simple user interface that shows the areas of fuel efficiency they directly control. FuelOpps has three different rat- ings based on moving mpg: accelera- tion/shifting, cruising and overall driving. The first two ratings each have two subsets: progressive shifting and high rpm, and overspeeding and maintaining low engine speed, respectively. For each rating, FuelOpps shows a horizontal scale of scores from 1 to 10. The driver's score is marked on the scale with two decimal points that shows drivers how the time they spent idling, per day, is over or under the fleet allowance. As an option, fleets can reward points to drivers for having a positive rating of idle time under the fleet allowance. Drivers can redeem their FuelOpps points from an online gift catalog. ECM Transport also gives its driv- ers the option to redeem points for meal vouchers. Drivers turn in food receipts with the rest of their paper- work to get reimbursed. Shading is used around the score to show drivers the range of all scores for drivers in their group, such as local, regional or longhaul. Drivers also see their per- centile in the group for each rating. The first two ratings are weighted to create the overall FuelOpps rating. By scoring in the 55th percentile or higher, drivers earn points for every mile driven during that day; no points are deducted. On the Website, drivers can view their ratings and points earned by date range. FuelOpps uses a separate rating for idling Transport is on track to improve its mpg by 0.4 over the next six months. "It seems to be doing a great job for us," Meiers says. Crossett Inc., a Warren, Penn.-based bulk transporter of petroleum products, began using FuelOpps in October 2011. The 75-truck company meets with drivers for monthly perfor- mance reviews. Managers have added FuelOpps scores to the review session, but drivers are able to monitor Fue- lOpps daily on their own. Since using FuelOpps, the company has improved its mpg by 0.3, says Alex Keddie, chief executive officer. Because Crossett already offers drivers an annual bonus based on total per- formance, Keddie decided not to use FuelOpps as an incentive program. "I think FuelOpps is user-friendly because of the way it sets up a natural competition," he says. "We're not using the points. I think the system is engaging enough."
