This week work was being completed to ready the lock chamber at the Narrows lock station for masonry repairs which will be continuing through the winter. Part of the work on Monday was the rescue of some of the fish left stranded by the dewatering operation which last week was reason for a detour to create a dam on the Upper Rideau to begin the operation. The first in a calendar of Santa Claus parades in North Leeds takes place on Sat., Nov. 18 with an afternoon event in Lynd- hurst. Organizers are encour- aging groups, families, and businesses to enter a float in the parade which this year has a Canada 150 theme. Line up for parade entrants is at the old school grounds on Oakel Street beginning at 12:30. No pre-registration is required. The parade winds its way through the village beginning at 2:00 p.m. sharp Cash prizes will be awarded in six categories including: business, out- of-town business, private, organization, out-of-town organization, horses. The parade is a major effort for the volunteers who need to raise $3,000 to put on the event to pay for insurance, prizes and refreshments for parade participants, and other expenses. Children will have an opportunity to meet Santa Claus after the parade at the library. Donations will be collected for the local food bank. A Stittsville man has been sentenced to 10 days in jail and ordered to reha- bilitate Christie Lake shore lands after failing to follow a previous order to rehabilitate the same shore lands. Kevin Cornell was found guilty of breach of a probation order issued under the Provincial Offenses Act and sen- tenced to 10 days in jail. A new probation order was issued for a year with the condition that he rehabili- tate shore lands he filled on Christie Lake, north of Westport. The Court heard that Cornell was previously convicted for filling shore lands on Christie Lake without a work permit and failing to obey a stop work order in April 2015. He had been fined $25,000 and ordered to rehabilitate the filled area. Since then, Cornell failed to submit a rehabili- tation plan to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry and rehabilitate the shore lands as required by the condition of the previous probation order. Justice of the Peace Claire Winchester heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Brockville, Oct. 12. To report a natural resources violation, call the MNRF at 1-877-847- 7667 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Rideau Lakes heritage groups are making an effort to coordinate their activities and share resources and municipal funding in an effort to make their organizations more sustainable. Members of the group include the Bastard and South Burgess Heritage Society, The Chaffey's Lock Heritage Society, The Delta Mill Society, The Elgin and Area Her- itage Society and the Port- land-on-the-Rideau His- torical Society. The group is seeking ongoing funding from the municipality with the ben- efit for the municipality of strengthening local eco- nomic development and supporting village vitality through cultural and her- itage activities. The group proposed a five-year funding model that would see them receive between .75 to 1.25 per cent of Rideau Lakes own-purpose taxa- tion. Council turned down that request but did ask the organizing committee to bring forward a proposed budget for 2018 and beyond. The members created a terms of reference to work with Rideau Lakes' Municipal Heritage Advi- sory Committee (MHAC) and the township with the goal of expanding, elevat- ing and coordinating her- itage offerings in the township. The groups have been receiving some funding through the MHAC and through the township's 'grants to others' pro- grams.
