Offseason Workouts
Provide Challenge
Purdues 6 a.m. workouts were expected to be challenging, and they are.
On Monday, the Boilermakers began their second week of the workouts,
which are at 6 a.m. Monday, Wednesday
and Friday.
We want to see where guys are
mentally, whos going to push through it,
whos is going to deal with the discomfort, said Duane Carlisle, the director of
sports performance. It is what it is. Those
ones who dont (deal well) have to be
pulled up and deal with it the way the
top level guys do.
Judging by the reaction of the Boilermakers, offseason workouts under firstyear coach Darrell Hazell have been more
difficult than those over the last few seasons. On a typical 6 a.m., the Boilermakers,
divided by positions, will be taken through
eight stations, with workouts of about five
minutes each. The approximately hourlong session

been hard.
Its not something I can describe,
punter Cody Webster said last week. Ill
just say one thing: Ive never thrown up,
but I came close on Monday.
Theyre definitely challenging, but
thats maybe something we were lacking
before. No knock on the coaches before,
but maybe that was something that separated us from the Big Ten champions. May-
be a little bit extra running, or extra gasser,
or another station, something like that.
I think what Coach Hazell has planned is
really good for us. I think people will be
happy this year.
Carlisle says Hazell has been clear in
his expectations for the Boilermakers.
The 6 a.m. workouts continue through
March 8, then spring practices begin a lit-
tle more than a week later.
The expectations are set in front of
the guys. Its a challenge and is hard, Carlisle said. Hes made that very clear, that
being champ is hard.
The guys have adapted well and
theyre surviving it. Theyll live to fight another day. j
