FRIDAY August 1 continued 28 4:30pm–5:20pm CEU: 1 Granite Ballroom | Moderated by John Janicek, DVM, MS, DACVS #4: Functional 3D imaging with PET | Speaker: Ben Buchanan, DVM, DACVIM, DACVECC PET is a rapidly developing nuclear imaging that provides a 3D image of the distal horse limb. This short topic will focus on what we can see and what types of cases it has been valuable with diagnostics. Eliminate the confusion of the tarsus vs suspensory or what is really wrong in the foot. PET not only shows a 3D image, it also shows where the pathology is active. Combined with MRI or CT and you have a detailed functional 3D image of the limb. #5: An Update on Cervical Spine Surgery | Speaker: John Janicek, DVM, MS, DACVS The goal of ventral interbody fusion is dependent upon the pathological process causing the clinical signs. In cases of dorsal or lateral spinal cord compression, the goal is to decompress the affected site(s) and stop repetitive trauma to the spinal cord, thus preventing the progression of neurological damage. Following surgery, an improvement of 1-2 (or more) grades of ataxia is expected. In cases of extradural spinal cord compression, 80% of all patients can improve at least one grade and 55% can improve two or more grades. The goal of arthroscopic intervertebral foraminotomy is to enlarge the intervertebral foramen using motorized and handheld instrumentation at the affected site of stenosis. Rehabilitation is unique to each horse, but six weeks after surgery, the horse can be ridden and slowly return to training. An estimated 75% of horses return to anticipated use and client satisfaction has been high. #6: A Non-Weight-Bearing Approach to the Dorsal Pouch of the Coffin Joint | Speaker: Scot Martin, DVM The coffin joint in sport horse medicine is injected quite frequently. The presenter will demonstrate how to access the joint in a non-weight bearing position so that the joint can be injected in a safer and more consistent manner. The speaker will also present the use of a foot stand to employ during this procedure. #115 TEXAS TAKES PART 2 7:00pm–10:00pm TEXAS EQUINE FOUNDATION GALA at the Tower Palm Pavilion Benefit Auction, Drinks, Dinner and Dancing. Tickets are required. #116 NASOPHARYNGEAL CICATRIX AND CHRONIC DIARRHEA/FECAL WATER Travertine Room Speaker: Piper Norton, DVM, DACVIM
