SCORE JOURNAL 20 BAJA NEWS Ensenada Beyond the season After the Harvest The grape harvest is one of the great moments on Ensenada's calendar. But when the celebrations end, the vineyards remain. Wine continues its journey in cellars and barrels. Winemakers return to the quieter work that follows harvest. Restaurants keep receiving what farms, sheries, orchards, ranches, and local producers bring to their kitchens. And travelers gain something increasingly valuable: time. Time to talk with the people behind the wine. Time to stay at the table a little longer. Time to discover that wine country has a life beyond its most celebrated weeks. There are mornings when the valleys seem suspended between seasons: vines beginning to change color, cool air holding onto the night, sunlight slowly reaching across the hills. The experience has simply become more intimate. By Andrés Martínez Bremer, President of Proturismo (Ensenada Visitors Bureau) and of the Mexican Association of Hotels and Motels of Ensenada Some destinations are dened by their busiest season. Ensenada is not one of them. As autumn settles over Baja California, the light softens, the Pacic air turns cooler, and the roads through the valleys grow quieter. Summer has stepped aside. Harvest celebrations begin to settle. But what remains is not less Ensenada. There is simply more room to experience it. More time to follow a road you have never taken. More space to linger over a meal. Because Ensenada has never been only one valley, one coastline, one route, or one season. It is a territory best understood by traveling through it. One Territory. Many Roads For some travelers, Ensenada begins beside the Pacic. For others, among the vineyards of Valle de Guadalupe. Both are only part of the story. Valle de Guadalupe has earned international recognition for wine and gastronomy, but it belongs to a much larger landscape. Drive beyond its best-known roads and the story continues. The Antigua Ruta del Vino carries an earlier chapter of Baja California's winemaking history, while farther south agricultural valleys, shing communities, beaches, ranches, and open landscapes reveal another side of the region. Sometimes that transformation happens within a single drive. The Pacic appears through the windshield. Then the road turns inland. Ocean air gives way to vineyards, olive trees, farms, and open country. A short distance later, the sea may appear again. In Ensenada, the road is part of what you came for.
