Wisconsin, Sept. 21:
Wisconsin routed UMass
45-0 in coach Gary Andersen's
debut Saturday.
Wisconsin used a balanced
offensive attack as it logged 393
yards on the ground and 205 yards
through the air; it was the first time
the Badgers had surpassed 300
yards rushing and 200 yards passing in the same game since a 62-17
win over Purdue on Nov. 5, 2011.
The Badgers have dominated Purdue of late, winning each
of the last five games by 21 or
more points, dating to 2006.
Purdue has had a difficult time
in games at Camp Randall Stadium,
where Wisconsin has posted a 2012-5 record. In Purdue's last three
visits to Madison, it has been outscored by an average of 31 points.
Northern Illinois,
Sept. 28:
The game marks just the
second meeting of the Northern
Illinois Huskies and Purdue Boilermakers on the gridiron.
In the first, in 2009, the Huskies upset the Boilermakers 2821 in Ross-Ade Stadium.
Between then and now, the
Huskies have established themselves as a legitimate contender.
NIU was Mid-American Conference champs in 2011 and 2012,
with latter marking the school's
first trip to a BCS bowl.
Coming into 2013, dualthreat quarterback Jordan
Lynch is a candidate to win the
Heisman Trophy. NIU has had
success against the Big Ten win-
ning two of five games, a streak
which started in a 28-21 win
over Purdue in 2009. Last weekend, NIU prevailed 30-27 against
Iowa as Mathew Sims notched
a game-winning 36-yard field
goal with four seconds left in the
game. Senior Jimmie Ward set
up the field goal as he snagged
his fifth career interception.
Ward hauled in the interception
and recorded 13 tackles while
playing through an injury that
required a cast on his left hand.
Lynch was, in relative terms,
contained, passing for 275 yards and
three scores but rushing for just 56.
Last year, Lynch became the first FBS
quarterback in history to throw for
more than 3,000 and rush for at least
1,500 yards in the same season. j
