N ow that spring is upon us, it is important to set aside some time to evaluate the performance of your business and staff over the past fall and winter seasons. Did your revenues meet your projections? Were your program enrollments up over last year? Were you able to control variable expenses? Did you and your staff consistently deliver exceptional customer service? If the answer to any of these questions is "No," then you might want to think about investing in training, or in some cases, re-training yourself and your staff. Investing in professional development is always money well spent and will not only be a benefit to the employees receiving the training, but will also be a tremendous benefit for their employer. Unfortunately, there are still many managers that believe: "If I spend money training employees, they will just use the skills they've gained to get a new job somewhere else that pays more." However, there have been numerous studies proving that employee training and development leads to lower turnover, higher motivation, increased productivity, fewer workplace injuries and better customer service. All of these factors contribute to higher profitability and long-term business sustainability. I encourage you to take the initiative to continue your education and improve your skills through some means of training before the next fall and winter seasons. STAR will be providing several opportunities for you and your staff in the coming months, starting with the 14th annual North American Rink Conference & Expo (NARCE) in Columbus, Ohio, this May (see the NARCE brochure on pages 21–34), and continuing with our Regional Training Programs this summer. There will also be many training opportunities available through your regional ice rink management associations' (i.e., MIAMA, NEISMA, WIAMA, RMRA) annual spring and fall conferences.
