15 MAR-APR 2019 MEETINGS & CONVENTIONS MCMAG-ASIA.COM Conference Exhibitions Iconic Tsukiji market finds a new purpose A fter 80 years as a fish market, the land originally occupied by Tokyo's iconic Tsukiji market will become an international conference centre under plans proposed by the city's authorities. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government wants to divide the 23-hectare site into space for international conferences and exhibitions, as well as hotels and restaurants, according to a Japan Today report. Plans for the site were finalised in March after a consultation with local residents. The site will first serve as a transportation hub during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Cruise saw a significant 35% increase in total passenger throughput to 1.87 million, thanks largely to the year-round deployment of Genting Dream and extended sailings from Royal Caribbean's Mariner of the Seas and Voyager of the Seas. Events Not In My Workplace Summit To highlight the issue of sexual harassment at the workplace, the inaugural Not In My Workplace (NIMW) Summit was held on February 21, 2019, at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC). Karen Bolinger, CEO of Melbourne Convention Bureau (MCB), in particular, led the charge and called on leaders in the MICE sector to take critical action as soon as possible. This NIMW Summit comes at a critical time. The 4th National Inquiry on Sexual Harassment in One in three Australian workers have been sexually harassed at work over the last five years, study finds. Australian Workplaces found that one in three Australian workers has been sexually harassed at work over the last five years. Furthermore, PCMA, the world's largest network of business event strategists, found that 80% of respondents had experienced some form of on-the-job sexual harassment. Perhaps even more worrying is the fact that 75% of those event professionals didn't report the problem to the proper authorities immediately. Through the establishment of NIMW, it is hoped that the conversation will shift from 'awareness to action' in addressing the issues of sexual harassment in Australia. Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau All geared up! The Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB), together with 13 industry partners from hotels, state bureaus and convention centres, made a strong showing at the recent Asia-Pacific Incentives and Meetings Expo (AIME) as part of their Visit Malaysia 2020 push. The event happened from February 18 to 20, 2019, and was held in Melbourne, Australia. The Visit Malaysia 2020 initiative not only aims to rally all industry players towards this common goal, but is a call to welcome tourists from all over the world to experience Malaysia's hospitality and diverse tourist attractions. This marked the ninth consecutive year of MyCEB's participation at the prominent trade show. This also comes after a great showing in 2018, where MyCEB and its industry partners secured a total of 152 business events, which in turn delivered an estimated economic impact of RM1.58 million (US$388,000), as well as attracted over 100,000 international delegates. Despite the strong market challenges in 2018, MyCEB recorded 27% above the targeted KPI of 340,000 delegate days set by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia. This is the best performance since its inception in 2009, registering a notable figure of 430,868 delegate days. PHOTO CREDIT: SEANPAVONEPHOTO/GETTY IMAGES
