24 HIPHOP / RNB guestlist.net Event Preview J Cole Shows London Apollo His Crooked Smile Issue 57 / 2013 guestlist recommends Action Bronson 2nd and 3rd December It's been merely two years since his debut album, Cole World: The Sideline Story, hit number one on the US Billboard Charts but J. Cole, born Jermaine Lamarr Cole, has taken his spot as one of the leaders of the new generation of lyricists in hip hop. The Virginia-raised MC began his career with two impressive mixtapes from which the track "Lights Please", caught the attention of his musical hero, and Roc Nation founder, Jay Z and secured him a deal as the first hip hop artist with the record label. The rapper followed up his mixtapes by a self-produced debut album which came in at number one and proved to listeners that his dexterity lies not only in his lyrics but on the production side also, crafting memorable songs such as Workout and Mr. Nice Watch featuring his mentor, Jay Z. This year he announced the release of his sophomore project, Born Sinner, which debuted at number two on the Billboard charts, losing out to musical genius Kanye West's genre-bending album "Yeezus". With two Gold-certified albums under his belt, a string of awards: BET 2013 Best Impact Track for Crooked Smile which features legendary, multi-platinum selling girl group TLC, and nominations including Best Rap/HipHop Album at the American Music Awards 2012, Producer & Lyricist of the Year at BET HipHop Awards 2012, Best New Artist at the 2012 Grammy Awards, and Best HipHop Video at the MTV Video Music Awards 2013 for Power Trip, his platinum selling collaboration with R&B sensation Miguel. His What Dreams May Come tour passes through the Eventim Apollo (formerly Hammersmith Apollo) on Caroline Street in London on the 2nd and 3rd December. Tickets are available now ranging between £33 and £40, doors open at 19:30, fans are advised to get tickets early as this is an event that is sure to be a full house. More @ guestlist.net Describing Action Bronson's rap persona in two words is quite easy; eccentric and explosive. The chef-turned-rapper ignites tracks in a similar manner that he did to food during his days as a respected gourmet chef in the city, with an online cooking show, Action In The Kitchen. He is on the path to success and signed a management deal with Goliath Artists, alongside Eminem and Blink-182, and a recording deal with Atlantic Records who will release his album in 2014. It's time for Action and fans should keep an eye out. Action has been on everybody's lips for a while now and this is a guy who loves to reciprocate to his very loyal fans. If you were there when Bronson played Camden's KOKO way back in June, you would have been treated to the Queen's rapper performing tracks on the venue's second and third levels much to the crowd's enjoyment. They were loving it. It's this kind of desire to constantly please the people that make him who he is such a huge name at the moment. One of the chief elements of his persona is his outward love of Cannabis. Again, if you were at the KOKO show, you were probably enveloped by a cloud of smoke usually reserved purely for smoke machines. Bronson can handle his shit. Even if he stops a show a couple of times to restart a song he messed up, you know he just wants you to have a good time. More @ guestlist.net NEW RELEASES MellowHigh MellowHigh M.I.A.
