GOLDANDBLACK EXPRESS • VOLUME 25, EXPRESS 13 • 10 BY KYLE CHARTERS KCharters@GoldandBlack.com T he Boilermakers dropped to .500 early this sea- s o n , rallying back vs. Florida State in the ACC/ Big Ten Challenge only to lose 67-64 in over- time Wednesday. Following are takeaways from Purdue's loss to Florida State: S The Boilermakers are running out of leeway in the non-conference season if they want to enter the Big Ten with at least a bubble-worthy NCAA résumé. Purdue is 3-3, with losses to mid-ma- jors Green Bay and George Washington and a missed opportunity for a RPI-builder against Florida State. Although the Flyers are only 3-3, they will be a quality challenge for the Boilermakers Sunday in Dayton. Afterward, Purdue has only four remaining non- conference games — an 18-game Big Ten schedule limited the early slate — home contests against Kansas and three mid-majors in the World Vision Classic in Mackey Arena. The Wildcats are 5-2. Winning out would put Purdue at 8-3 enter- ing the Big Ten, although without a marquee vic- tory. Arguably, however, the Boilermakers also wouldn't have a bad loss, with Green Bay and GW strong mid-majors and FSU with a chance for a solid season in the ACC. S The Boilermak- ers are having trouble doing much of anything consistently right now. The rebounding is shaky at best. Defense has fluc- tuated, being good in the second halves vs. George Washington and Florida State but poor in the first. The Seminoles, for instance, shot 52 percent in the first half, building a 10-point lead at halftime, before Purdue held them to less than 32 percent in the second. The Boilermakers need to find that in- tensity from the jump if they want to be able to stay with quality opponents early. It's a lesson they're getting now, but need to learn from it. S Only Andreona Keys is contributing significant- ly among the Boilermakers' four freshmen. Keys, who probably should move into the starting lineup over sophomore Bridget Perry, is averaging 6.3 points per game, including four off the bench against Florida State. She looks confident beyond her years, is aggressive and probably should be getting more than her 17 minutes per game. Center Bree Horrocks scored a career- high eight points off the bench vs. Florida State, doing so in only 11 minutes, but she was rebound- less. Perhaps still, though, a breakout. Rookies Justine Hall and Erica Moore aren't playing much, averaging only 6.3 minutes per game. Neither came in against Florida State. j W O M E N ' S B A S K E T B A L L G O L D B O X L I N K S T O G A M E S T O R Y Tom Campbell April Wilson has been solid for the Boilermakers of late, scoring a game-high 17 vs. Florida State. A LOOK BACK AT THE LAST WEEK OF BASKETBALL FLASH FORWARD Opponent: Dayton Location: UD Arena (Dayton, Ohio) When: 2 p.m. Sunday Notables: The Flyers are 3-3 following a 79-76 win over Wright State on Wednesday. Their three losses have been on the road at Washington, Gonzaga and Iowa. This will be Dayton's second home game. … Senior guard Andrea Hoover and senior forward Ally Malott lead the Flyers in scoring, averaging 18 and 14.2 points per game, respectively. The duo also combines for about 16 rebounds. … Dayton averages nearly 73 points per game but allows 70. … Purdue is 4-6 all-time vs. Dayton, last playing in 2009, a home loss.
