Gold and Black Illustrated at 25
As we celebrate our 25th year of publishing Gold and Black Illustrated, we look
back at memorable covers while reflecting what was going on at the time.
It was his biggest shot as a Boilermaker. Tarrance
Crump, a junior college transfer guard from Alabama, playing in just his
sixth college camp, hit this runner with one second left in the clock to
deliver the Boilermakers to a 61-59 win over Virginia in the Big Ten/ACC
Challenge. It earned him a spot on the Dec. 5, 2006 issue.
The Cavaliers mistakenly thought that Coach Matt Painter would
design a play for one of his two senior standouts, Carl Landry or David
Teague. But on the game-winning play, it was Landry who played the
perfect decoy, giving Crump the space he needed to work his magic.
There are some striking similarities from then to now. In '06, the
Boilermakers were coming off two wins in Maui and had some mo-
mentum heading back to the mainland. The Boilermakers parlayed the
early-season success into a 22-12 season, helping Painter earn his first trip to the NCAA Tournament.
Only time will tell if this year's early season momentum will cast Painter and Co. into the Big Dance once
again.
