GOLDANDBLACK EXPRESS • VOLUME 25, EXPRESS 28 • 14 BY KYLE CHARTERS KCharters@GoldandBlack.com W ith an overwhelmingly young roster including eight underclassmen, Purdue wanted a schedule that would be manageable for a growing team. And it thinks it might have put one together. Purdue announced its non-conference schedule in April, a slate that includes known home opponents Jacksonville State, Illinois-Chicago, Dayton, Incarnate Word, Ball State and Maine. Of those, only the Flyers were an NCAA Tournament team last season. The Boilermakers also will play a yet-to-be-determined opponent from the ACC in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge and have a Thanksgiving holiday tournament, the Gulf Coast Showcase, featuring Dayton, Louisville, Louisiana State, Maine, Marist, Missouri State and Stanford. Purdue's three opponents there, however, haven't yet been announced. It will also play at North Florida. The Boilermakers start the season Nov. 8 with an exhibition tilt against 2007 Purdue All-American Katie Gearlds and her Marian University squad in Mackey Arena. Purdue will play an 18-game conference schedule, featuring five home-and-away pairings, four home contests and four games on the road. The Boilermakers draw home-and-away matchups with Iowa, Maryland, Michigan, Nebraska and Wisconsin next season, while hosting Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota and Rutgers and traveling to Michigan State, Northwestern, Ohio State and Penn State LOOKING AT QUARTERS Women's basketball could see a major shift as soon as next season. The NCAA Women's Basketball Rules Committee recommended a proposal earlier this month to shift games into four 10-minute quarters. The recommendation, which has been endorsed by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Board of Directors, will be heard by an oversight panel on June 8. The committee says the four- quarter format will enhance the flow of the game. Also as part of the recommendation, according to NCAA.com: S Teams would reach the bonus to shoot two free throws on the fifth team foul in each quarter. S In the proposed four- quarter format, team fouls would be reset to zero at the start of each quarter. However, if a team reaches the bonus in the fourth quarter, that team would remain in the bonus in any additional overtime periods. S Media timeouts in televised games would also be changed to one in each quarter, at the first dead ball after the five-minute mark. The periods between quarters would also serve as media breaks.
