commercial carrier journal | october 2015 29 M eritor Wabco unveiled OnGuardActive, an active brak- ing driver assist feature that serves as an add-on to the company's OnGuard platform and is designed to trigger when detecting stationary objects. With OnGuardActive, Meritor Wabco turns the collision avoidance capabilities of its OnGuard platform toward stationary objects by using sophisticated radar, which the company said is active and accurate regardless of visibility conditions. Other key features of OnGuardActive are forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control and extended brake assist. "Extended brake assist is when the system notices the closing rate needs more brake pressure than the driver has applied," says Mark Melletat, Meritor Wabco's director of trailer systems and field operations. When a potential impact is detected, OnGuardActive has the ability to pro- vide audible, visual and haptic warnings, reduce engine torque automatically and apply the foundation brakes to help avoid or mitigate a collision. OnGuardActive will replace Meritor Wabco's current OnGuard system. Mel- letat said the new system, expected to be available January 2016, is compatible with ABS (ESC and RSC) and backward-com- patible with 2013 and newer radar systems, and that it uses current hardware so that current users only need a software change. OnGuard works in tandem with ProView, Meritor Wabco's Fleet Perfor- mance Management System that can generate incident videos.
