With a win Saturday, Purdue football can achieve something it hasn't done in 40 years: Win at Minnesota in a game played outside. Sure, the Gophers played inside at the Metrodome FIVE POINTS TO PONDER 1 from 1982-2008 and the Boilermakers won 5 of 12 during that span. But playing in the elements in Minneapolis has been a far greater challenge for the Gold and Black as it has struggled over the years, posting just a 7-21-3 ledger dating back to 1894. Among those seven wins, though, are a few that are some of the most significant in school annals. In 1960 at the Gophers' old Memorial Stadium, the Boilermakers upset the No. 1-ranked Gophers 23-14. Even though it lost two games that season, Minnesota would go on to be named national champions in both major polls, mark- ing the only time Purdue has beaten a team in the same season that went on to win the national title. Yet, it would be difficult to find a more important win DeMoss flat–soled coaches shoes and ended up having a day worthy of a Hall of Fame college career. He rushed for 152 yards and returned a kickoff 97 yards for a score to open the second half. Senior defensive back Arnold Carter also returned a fumble 45 yards for a score and recorded an interception. The Boiler- maker defense, led by future NFL standouts Gregg Bingham and Dave Butz, held the Gophers to just 252 yards, and Boilermak- er quarterback Gary Danielson completed just one pass for 11 yards in the game. — Alan Karpick than the Boilermakers' 16-0 triumph on Nov. 12, 1966. In the 19-degree temperatures, Purdue broke open a modest 3-0 halftime lead to win going away. The game clinched a Rose Bowl appearance for the Boilermakers, helping make a dream come true for Purdue fans as there was nothing like the first trip to Pasadena. Any time a move as significant as the one the Gophers just made, mov- ing starting QB MarQueis Gray to receiver in favor of freshman Philip Nelson at quarterback, occurs, there are going to be some unknowns in game prep.
