Locals grab a burger and a beer at the Black Cow, shop for dinner necessities at Crosby's Market, or pick up a birthday present at one of the gift shops or boutiques. "Whenever you go into one of the small establishments everybody is very friendly and helpful and easy to be around," says Wenham town clerk Dianne Bucco. e Hamilton-Wenham Library opened in 2001, after both towns agreed to give up their smaller, local libraries to create a larger, richer resource for both. Today, it is a centerpiece of community life. "e library is one of the best places to experience the community," says library direc- tor Jan Dempsey. "at is an aspect of what make these two communities unique." In Hamilton, the aptly named Community House was built in 1921 in memory of eight local men who had died serving in World War I. Today it sponsors community theatre productions, outdoor summer concerts, and an annual block party. Three times a week dozens of children flock to the building to hear as well as dance and sing along to local performer Brian Doser, known as the Music Man. Another local institution, the Wenham Tea House, has been in business since 1912, making it perhaps the oldest operating tea house in the country. e quaint shop is owned by the Wenham Village Improvement Society, and money from the operation funds civic projects and scholarships for local students; since 1950, the society has awarded nearly $600,000 in scholarship funds. No matter where you go in the two towns, though, you are sure to feel welcome. "e sense of community is really strong," Bucco says. "Each neighborhood gels together and you just always feel like you belong." / F A C E S + P L A C E S / H A M I L T O N 7 Erins Way, 3 bd., 5 ba., 1 half ba., 3,906 sq. ft., 5.17 acre Price: Available upon request.
