Kristen Matlock Dominates The Queen Of SCORE’s Pro UTV Classes Is At The Top Of Her Game By Dan Sanchez Photos by GetSomePhoto Kristen Matlock once again had everything working in her favor to go all out at the 52nd BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 500 Presented by 4 Wheel Parts. Starting fourth off the line in the Pro UTV N/A class, but well behind the Pro UTV FI class, Matlock drove solo through the competition to finish first as the Pro UTV Overall and Pro UTV N/A Class winner. “Our race went well, picking off racers from the start,” said Matlock. “We got to full speed in the first few miles and got the adrenaline pushed out before we got to the speed zones. Then we began running a fast and smart race. There are so many lines you can take in San Felipe, we picked the right ones and began passing everyone we could.” Before long, Matlock got to the lead pack of Pro UTV FI cars and saw her husband Wayne Matlock along the side with problems. “When I saw my husband stopped, he radioed me and told me he was fine and to keep pushing forward,” she said. “Passing Wayne is always hard, but he broke an A-arm, and I knew the team would help him get it fixed.” Matlock drove hard through the course and backed off once she knew she was in the lead. “About 100-miles to the finish, we knew we had the overall lead, physically on the course, and I backed off the throttle a little to preserve the car,” said Matlock. “Honestly, I was at full throttle the entire race. On the dry lake bed, it was fast. It’s usually about 60-miles long and boring, but I had the accelerator floored the entire time keeping up with turbo cars at 76-78 mph. Wayne usually gets up to 90 mph, but I think the heat and humidity kept the turbo cars from going all out in that area to keep their temperatures down.” Sitting in the navigator seat in Matlock’s Polaris RZR was Pro Moto racer Max Eddy, who began working with Matlock to navigate with her in this race. “Max Eddy had a blast riding with me, and his personality fits in with our team,” says Matlock. “He’s an asset to our win, and he is good at picking out the lines.” Matlock and Eddy are planning on teaming up once again to challenge the 53rd BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 1000 in November. “I know Max would like to drive at some point, but not this time,” says Matlock with a laugh. “We want to get the Pro UTV Overall win again at the SCORE Baja 1000, and we’re pumped-up for it!” Team Polaris In Dakar After Matlock’s Overall win at the SCORE Baja 500, Polaris announced its factory team made up of Wayne and Kristen Matlock with Craig Scanlon will be racing in Dakar. “Max is navigating with me there as well, and we’re happy to be a part of Polaris’s factory effort in Dakar,” says Matlock. “If all goes well at the SCORE Baja 1000, racing in Dakar this January will add to a great SCORE 2020 season, and we’ll be ready once again to see what the 2021 season of SCORE will bring.” SJ
