® 8 END OF YEAR REPORT 2024 Approved for distribution outside of the LoRa Alliance ® ® Updated LoRaWAN Relay Specification TS011-1.0.1 Published The latest revision enhances clarity within the specification, particularly in the descriptions of the back-off and notification mechanisms. Additionally, it addresses minor issues related to MAC commands, ensuring better accuracy in end-device configuration confirmation and management of end-device filtering lists. Publication of EN 13757-8 Adaptation Layer Standard for M-Bus over LoRaWAN ® EN 13757-8 is a European standard published by the Comité Européen de Normalisation (CEN) / TC294 whose scope is "communication systems for meters." The standard defines the specifications of an adaptation layer to transport M-Bus upper layers for meters and sensors using wireless communication protocols other than wireless M-Bus. It addresses alternative radio technologies, especially LPWANs, that may be based on Internet Protocol and operate in licensed or unlicensed frequency bands. The adaptation layer enables the large number of utilities using M-Bus to leverage LoRaWAN's performance and coverage availability while ensuring interoperability on the application level. Publication of TS009-1.2.1 Certification Protocol This protocol specification allows the LoRaWAN Certifica- tion Test Tool (LCTT) to fully validate the compliance of an end-device to the LoRaWAN L2 Specification [TS001] and the LoRaWAN Regional Parameters Specification [RP002] for Class A, B, and C end-devices, and end-devices that support the Static Context Header Compression (SCHC) protocol and Relay. New Work Item: Using PKI for Simplified Device Provisioning This initiative emerged from the roadmap definition process, following detailed analysis and selection by LoRa Alliance ® members. Spearheaded by the Security Working Group, the project defines a standard method for provisioning root keys in devices and join servers without transferring symmetric keys. The secure mechanism leverages a public key infrastructure (PKI) to provision public certificates in end-devices and join servers. Root keys are generated locally on both ends, typically within Secure Elements or Hardware Security Modules, which store and use shared secrets without exposing them. New Task Force: Plug-and-Play This task force aims to simplify end-device operations for LoRaWAN users by ensuring secure onboarding to networks and applications with minimal user interaction. Existing LoRaWAN features, such as QR codes and backend interface specifica- tions, lay the groundwork for this initiative. The task force further enhances the end-user experience by streamlining the storage of, and access to, end-device payload codecs and profiles. The task force will also educate users on this process and how to leverage parameters like VendorProfileID and JoinEUI to facilitate smoother end-device onboarding. New Task Force: Low-Power Network Discovery Created through the roadmap definition process and approved by members, this task force focuses on defining a secure mechanism for end devices to discover the presence of LoRaWAN networks. The primary application targets drive-by metering scenarios, where mobile vehicles collect data during transit. Other use cases include mobile end devices with intermittent LoRaWAN coverage, such as temperature monitors that upload data upon reaching a warehouse. The solution involves an authen- ticated beacon, allowing end devices to search for networks in ultra-low power mode. This approach resembles the wake- on-radio (WOR) protocol used in LoRaWAN relay operations. Beacons could also enable international roaming by signaling the different networks and available channels. Network Identifiers Management The Technical Committee oversees the management of network identifiers and notes an increase in Type 7 NetID allocations to non-members. This trend highlights the growing acceleration of roaming within the LoRaWAN ecosystem. TECHNICAL COMMITTEE
