The former Boilermaker became the fastest quarterback to reach 50,000 yards in the NFL — and only the fifth ever — by hitting it in his 183rd career game. Peyton Manning, who is in the 50,000 club with Brett Favre, Dan Marino and John Elway, had previously been the fastest, hitting the mark in 191 games. Brees threw for 313 yards and four touchdowns in the win over Carolina, a victory critical to the Saints' hopes of winning the NFC South division title. But the 50,000 record wasn't the only one Brees hit vs. the Panthers. He also set a league record by exceeding 30 touchdown passes for six straight seasons. First it was a foot, then a hamstring, with the setbacks making him feel like the odd man out in Seattle. "Most definitely," Avril told the Seattle Times. "You sign, you are on a new team. I was with Detroit for five years and I had the same defensive line coach, the same D-line players around me. So we knew what we had. But when you come to a new situation, they know what they have but they don't and going into later on in the playoffs, I think that's part of the reason they went about it this way, too; to stay strong even through that stretch."
